Meet Jess, the Planet Doughnut’s first ever taste tester. Alice sat down with Jess at the Shrewsbury bakery to discuss the role and get to know her better. 

Tell our readers a little about yourself?

"Hi, I’m Jess, I’m 25 and currently residing in Staffordshire with my husband, but originally from Milton Keynes. I work for a film company in their merchandising team, handling customer service and sales. As I'm accustomed to fast emails in my professional life, it has become a part of my personal life as well, so when I got an email from the PD team that I had been selected, I replied instantly to accept!”

How did you hear about the taste tester role?

"Last year, I visited the PD Lichfield store, bought the Jammie D and The Homer doughnuts, and noticed a poster advertising the taste tester role and how to apply. I applied, received a vegan box, posted an honest review on Google, and was subsequently selected as the taste tester."

Why did you apply for the role of taste tester?

"I have an enormous sweet tooth and simply love doughnuts! Growing up with my dad's diverse cooking, I developed a keen palette for different flavours. I'm excited to explore the variety of flavours offered by Planet Doughnut."

What is your favourite variety of doughnuts?

"My favourite doughnuts are the classic funfair ones because they are warm, comforting, and generously sugared. I love doughnuts in general for their textures, taste, and the diverse range of flavours."

When asked if Planet Doughnut is now her favourite doughnut brand, Jess admitted, "Honestly, no one could pull me away from Krispy Kreme, but now that I've tried Planet Doughnut, I don't think I'll go back. The size and flavours of Planet Doughnut's doughnuts surpass theirs."

What are you most looking forward to over the next 6 months?"I'm thrilled to be part of something bigger, learning about how these doughnuts are made and the story behind PD and its expansion. I love the product and the ethos, and I can't wait to be part of the process."

Having now visited the bakery, what are your take away points? 
 
"I can't believe how everything is handmade. The bakery follows a meticulous step-by-step process, and there's a smooth flow from each section of the production process. Initially thinking it was a medium-sized enterprise with a production line and machinery, I'm pleased to see that PD maintains a handcrafted nature, ensuring each doughnut undergoes an intricate production process from creation to decoration to dispatch."
